Starting over is never easy. Losing a job—or facing an unexpected career shift—can shake your confidence and leave you wondering what comes next. For me, that moment came after 50 years in the same industry. What felt like a sudden ending slowly revealed itself to be the beginning of something entirely new.
Through reflection, prayer, and looking back at the ways I’d always been drawn to helping others, I discovered that God had been preparing me for this all along. The passion I found in listening, encouraging, and walking alongside people was pointing me toward life coaching—a calling I didn’t even realize I had been living out for years.
What now? What will my future look like? Should I change careers? Am I too old to learn new skills? And how will I pay the bills?
These questions swirled in my head after my 50-year career in the transportation industry came to an abrupt end in September 2023. It was a shock. For so long, work had been part of my daily rhythm. Ironically, I never truly loved what I was doing—but I stayed because it was familiar, stable, and provided security.
Suddenly, that chapter closed. I was faced with the uncomfortable reality of starting over. But in the quiet moments of uncertainty, I began to sense that maybe this was more than an ending. Maybe it was an invitation to finally step into the calling I had been circling around my entire life.
When I looked back over the years, I noticed a pattern. What always brought me the most joy wasn’t the job itself—it was the people. I was energized by listening, encouraging, and walking alongside others.
I thought of the single parents I mentored, the support groups I led, and the countless conversations where someone just needed me to be present and to listen. Even in everyday settings—whether with co-workers, friends, family, or complete strangers—people seemed to naturally open up to me.
Now, I can clearly see how God was gently preparing me. Every challenge, every relationship, and every opportunity to serve was shaping me into the woman I am today. Life coaching wasn’t a sudden idea—it was the natural next step of a path I had already been walking for decades.
Change is hard. Losing a job or facing an unexpected career shift can feel like the rug has been pulled out from under you. The fear of the unknown can be paralyzing. But sometimes, the very changes we resist the most are the ones that set us free.
Job loss, as painful as it was, forced me to pause and ask: What do I really want? What do I feel called to do? For me, the answer was clear once I stopped long enough to listen.
